John D. StarrChairman / Treasurer
John Starr is a true pioneer in the electrical industry and has dedicated over 50 years to the betterment of the electrical trade and providing the best in electrical contracting services throughout the country. As a long time advocate for merit shop contracting, Mr. Starr has lead the charge in raising the bar in all areas of electrical contracting including: training, safety, production, and overall client satisfaction. As President of Starr Electric for over 35 years, Mr. Starr has built some of the Carolina’s most notable projects and personally directed the company to be more than just a low number on bid day, but rather to provide an overall relationship of dependability between contractor and customer at every level. Simply put, Mr. Starr has changed the electrical contracting industry. His mentorship has produced some of the industry’s greatest leaders and most knowledgeable technicians.
John Starr joined Starr Electric in 1961 when he was just a high school student. After attending Guilford College, Mr. Starr dedicated himself to learning every aspect of the company including: estimating, engineering, project management, and contract management. Mr. Starr was elected executive vice president in 1975, and on January 1, 1980, he assumed the office of president and treasurer. He became the CEO and chairman of Starr Electric Company in 1997.
In 2014 Mr. Starr was recognized for his efforts in the industry and inducted into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Society by the Governor of North Carolina. This is the highest honor a civilian can be awarded in the state. Membership in this exclusive society is based on the inductee's lifetime achievements as they relate to the betterment of North Carolina.
Harley S. GarrisonChief Executive Officer
Harley Garrison joined Starr Electric in 2004 as the Vice President of Administration to oversee all aspects of operations, business enhancements, information technology, human resources and risk management. Mr. Garrison streamlined the shared services divisions of the company and was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2010. With a proven track record in senior management, Mr. Garrison continued to expand on the overall corporate philosophy and vision of Starr Electric Company to promote our brand of unwavering commitment throughout the company and the Carolinas. In March of 2015, Mr. Garrison was promoted to Chief Executive Officer. In this role, he is responsible for overall leadership and implementation Starr Electric Company’s strategic growth strategies in both current and emerging markets. Harley’s passion for redefining the way projects are delivered in the electrical industry is raising the bar in areas of operational excellence, technology, innovation, and alternate procurement strategies.
Mr. Garrison was a Jefferson Scholar at the University of Virginia and received his MBA from Kenan-Flagler School of Business. Mr. Garrison has held numerous board seats in local organizations and currently sits on the selection board of Jefferson Scholars at the University of Virginia.
Philip A. CampoloChief Financial Officer
Phil Campolo received a BS in accounting from Boston College and his MBA from the University of South Carolina. During his career, he has held key financial executive positions in both the public and private sectors, where he gained extensive experience in the construction industry. Prior to joining Starr Electric in 2008, Mr. Campolo served as the CFO of a privately held construction and real estate conglomerate with operations and property holdings across the Southeast.
Dennis R. NorrisP.E., Executive Vice President / General Manager, Greensboro Division
Dennis Norris received a BS in electrical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in 1974. After graduation he worked in plant maintenance and engineering with a large corporation until 1979 when he accepted a position with Starr Electric in the estimating and engineering departments. Mr. Norris is a Registered Professional Engineer in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia, and he is a licensed electrical contractor in the state of Florida. A former member of the North Carolina Building Code Council, Mr. Norris currently oversees Starr Electric’s design-build department.
Jeff L. WhittenSenior Vice President / General Manager, Charlotte Division
Jeff Whitten began his electrical career in 1977 working as an apprentice and field electrician while attending Central Piedmont Community College. In addition to a wealth of experience gained as a field superintendent, general superintendent, estimator and project manager, he has worked in virtually every market segment of the industry, from healthcare to mission critical facilities to office towers. Mr. Whitten holds unlimited electrical contractors licenses in North Carolina and South Carolina and currently serves on the Carolinas AGC Subcontractor Relations Board. And sits on the Board of the Association of Builders and Contractors.
Dan M. ThomasVice President / General Manager, Columbia Division
Dan Thomas began his electrical career with Starr Electric while attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1995, and he has been with the company ever since. Mr. Thomas has worked as an apprentice, electrician, foreman, superintendent, and operations manager, and he holds a Master Electrician’s License and an Unlimited Electrical License in the state of South Carolina. Mr. Thomas has extensive experience in every facet of the industry, from healthcare to manufacturing.
James H. Cavaco, Jr.Vice President / General Manager, Raleigh Division
James “Jim” began his electrical career in the Air force in 1986, where he earned his degree in Electrical Technology, he then furthered his education at the University of South Carolina. From his beginnings in the electrical industry, Jim held positions as Technician, Draftsman, Engineer, Designer, Project Manager, Senior Project Manager and Project Executive. Jim has lead projects in excess of 70 Million in electrical cost and he specializes in large, complex projects in the vertical markets of Mission Critical, Healthcare, Higher Education, Aviation and Retail.
J. Douglas StarrVice President Corporate Analyst
Douglas Starr attended Appalachian State University while simultaneously completing the Starr Electric apprenticeship program. He quickly gained experience as a laborer, field electrician, foreman, estimator and project manager before becoming a corporate analyst for the company. Tasked with reviewing job costs, projections and verifying project budgets, the younger Mr. Starr represents the third generation of his family to work for Starr Electric.
David M. EvansVice President of Business Development
David Evans joined Starr Electric in 2010, after a successful career working for the nation's largest public and privately held construction companies. Mr. Evans serves the company in roles of Business Development, Marketing, Communications, Strategic Initiatives/Planning, Sales and Business Enhancements. His prior experience includes management and ownership of a construction company, who specialized in land acquisition, building and private development. A college scholar-athlete, Mr. Evans graduated from Appalachian State University in 1998, and holds a North Carolina General Contractor's License. Mr. Evans was the Recipient of the ENR’s Southeast Top 20 Under 40 Construction Executives and the TBJ’s top 40 Under 40 Leadership Awards.
David Clewley, PHRDirector of Human Resources
As a leader within the company's Executive Management team, David Clewley leads the development and implementation of best practices in human resources and safety. Working with project teams across the company's national and regional network, he facilitates a deliberate, company-wide focus on value-based codes of conduct and safety protocols. He works closely with business leaders to streamline their processes, reduce redundancy, and increase existing knowledge sharing to bring greater value differentiation to the company's national client base. David holds several key certifications and is a current member of the following; Society for Human Resources –PHR 2002, NFPA committee 2004, US Dept of Labor 500 OTI 2003 and NCCER Master Trainer 2007.
Mike PresleyVice President of Hayes & Lunsford Electrical Contractors, Inc.
(A Wholly Owned Subsidiary of Starr Electric Company, Inc.)
Mike joined Hayes & Lunsford Electrical Contractors, Inc. in 1991 as an apprentice and electrician in Asheville NC, then in 1996 relocated to its Greenville SC office as an estimator, project superintendant and project manager. In 2004 he was made VP of South Carolina operation. By 2007 he assumed the role of President/COO of all of Hayes & Lunsford operations. In 2012 Starr Electric Company acquired Hayes & Lunsford electrical contracting divisions in Asheville & Greenville. His position has developed into VP General Manager for those two divisions. Mike holds an Unlimited Electrical License in South Carolina and Georgia. He earned a BA in History from Mercer University.
